Ocular Diabetes
Diabetes results from the inability to regulate blood sugar (glucose), by the insufficient insulin production (type 1) or the inability of cells to use it (type 2). Glucose accumulates in the blood causing structural changes in the blood vessels, so that oxygen and other nutrients don't reach tissues, compromising their functions.

Glaucoma
Glaucoma includes a group of diseases where there is a progressive loss of nerve fibers from the optic nerve (the nerve that carries visual information from the eye to the brain), and is usually associated with an increase in intraocular pressure. In our population, the primary type of glaucoma is primary open-angle glaucoma, which increases with age and when there's a family history of the disease.

Pediatric Ophthalmology
It is during pregnancy that the morphological structure of the visual system is developed. Retina and Vitreous
Retina and Vitreous
Retina is the inner layer of the eye responsible for imaging. It retains the projected rays of light and directs them to the brain, through the optic nerve, where the images are subsequently formed. The retina is composed of two surrounding parts, the pigmentary or sensory retina and the neural retina. The pigmentary retina, which contains the photo-receptors, is adjacent to the choroid. The neural retina is in contact with the vitreous humor and contains the cells whose extensions form the optic nerve. The vitreous humor is the gel-like substance that fills most of the eyeball.
